The House of the Ladies
The House of the Ladies, named after the fresco with the ladies and papyrus is a large three storey building. Of all the buildings with wall paintings that have been uncovered at Akrotiri the House of the Ladies has been the most problematic. It was once a three storey building with as many as 10 rooms on each floor.
Two separate programs of decoration have been distinguished corresponding to the excavator's division of the room 1 into two sections, 1a (west) and 1b (east), divided by a partition wall made of mud bricks. It can be assumed that the House of the Ladies was a mainly stone and brick house in which people of upper class lived. The building was advanced in relation to the bronze age indicating Theran life to be an advanced civilisation for the bronze age. |
